Aquaponics – What Is It?

Aquaponics Equals Healthy Roots

Aquaponics Equals Healthy Roots

Aquaponics is growing plants using a combination of aquaculture (fish production) and hydroponics (soiless plant production). If you have ever tried hydroponics you know that you have to continually add nutrients to the system. With aquaponics you never need to add nutrients, the fish are taking care of that for you. The fish waste supplies nutrients to the plants. The plants cleanse the water of these substances which can be detrimental to the fish if they are in too high a concentration. The clean water is then pumped back to the fish tank.
A lot of people are under the misconception that aquaponic farming is so much more complicated that growing in the dirt. This is just not true. Once your system has been established, it is very low maintenance. It is a closed, balanced ecosystem with recirculating water. Our system requires a low density of fish. This makes the system much simpler and less expensive to operate, eliminating the need for additional waste removal components. Of course as with any gardening, you will need to occasionally check the parameters of your system, but with the simple test kits available this is an easy task. Plus, did we mention that there is no back breaking weeding or roto tilling with aquaponics gardening? Perfect.
